How to Have Clear Skin in Just 10 Easy Steps

clear skin

It may seem like an impossible feat to achieve perfect, clear, glowing skin yet social media has so many clear skinned people that it doesn’t seem fair, right? While we all don’t have perfect genetics or hundreds of dollars to spend on facials and top of the line skin care – the little known thing is that it DOESN’T cost much to attain beautiful, healthy skin!

With the hefty price tags of skin care products these days, it does seem like you have to shell out a whopping sum to come even close to Kardashian or supermodel level clear skin.

However, if you delve into the reality of what ingredients to follow for your skin and what the benefits are, it actually comes down to where to shop for your skin care, nothing more!

For now, here are 10 steps for clear skin that are completely doable!

10 Steps to Clear Skin

1. Keep it Clean

Your makeup might hide zits, but it also traps free radicals against your skin. Wash your face morning, night, and after the gym with a cleanser that contains up to 2 percent salicylic acid or an antibacterial rich ingredient like manuka honey to ward off trapping sweat, dirt, and grime into your pores.

2. Don't Pop Your Zits

It's so hard not to, we know. But try to resist! Popping your pimples will only result in inflammation, scarring, and yes, more acne. If you're truly tempted, some experts suggest keeping your hands busy with a squeeze toy. For the best spot treatment, we recommend dapping a small amount of manuka honey to kill off the bacteria, reduce the inflammation, treat the acne area, and heal any acne scars that you have!

3. But If You Do ...

Okay, what's done is done. Now disinfect the area with a benzoyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide product (such as manuka honey, which is rich naturally in the latter).

4. Stick With the Basics

There are certain ingredients that have proven themselves in clinical trials (benzoyl peroxide or glycolic or salicylic acid for acne) — use them. And give them a chance — they need at least six weeks to work. If nothing has changed by week six, the product will never work for you. Otherwise, manuka honey is known for clearing up acne and preventing further breakouts (do you see our theme here?)!

5. Try Retinoids

Retinoids aren't just for wrinkles. They also fade spots, build collagen, and prevent acne — but only when used correctly. At night, instead of your overnight acne treatment, dot a pea-size amount on your fingertips and rub it all over your face. Using them on the skin as a whole helps with cell turnover. Also, manuka honey is rich with amino acids, which are the building blocks of collagen and the ultimate line filler, wrinkle reducer, and anti-aging god!

6. Treat Early

Spot-treating your pimple can reduce its lifespan by one to two days. But the real goal is a clear complexion — and early intervention is key. You need to prevent acne from forming, and that means treating skin that's prone to pimples even if there are none present.

7. But Don't Over Treat

Overusing acne products can lead to excess drying and, in some cases, chemical burns. Apply the amount recommended on the packaging (usually enough for a thin layer), not a giant palmful. Or you won’t even have to worry about overusing when you choose to have your skin care products with manuka honey as a key ingredient!

8. Calm Down

Easier said than done, we know. But stress hormones increase oil production, which can lead to clogged pores and whiteheads. So, make an effort to relax when needed and we all know that life is tough and we all need a breather more often than not. Anything that reduces stress in your body — tai chi, running, aromatherapy, working out, a warm bath — will make you have less acne, less often.

9. Protect Your Skin

Acne products can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, so be sure to use SPF 30 or higher. Look for formulas labeled noncomedogenic, which won't clog pores.

10. Fade Scars

Just because the pimple's gone doesn't mean it disappeared. Use a scar treatment with added salicylic acid on dark spots to fade them over time – or, you guessed it, use a skin care brand that features manuka honey to wash all of your worries about acne scarring from your mind!
